The Salvation Army Gives Relief to Survivors of 50 Tornadoes in Midwest
Emergency response teams help survivors and first responders
Alexandria, VA (November 18, 2013) – In response to yesterday’s destructive storms and tornadoes in the Midwest, The Salvation Army is providing food, shelter, water and emotional and spiritual care to survivors in Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana. Approximately 50 tornadoes were reported Sunday according to the National Weather Service. Disaster response teams from three states have been deployed to assess damage, and personnel are on the ground providing relief for survivors and first responders through the Army’s network of Corps Community Centers.
Mobile feeding units are distributing meals and water in multiple cities and counties in the affected states including Paducah, Kentucky; Brookport, Gifford, Grundy, Pekin, Roanoke, Will, and Washington, Illinois; and Lafayette, Indiana. Shelters are open in Pekin, Illinois and Kokomo, Indiana to provide immediate lodging for survivors. The Salvation Army is working with McCracken County Fire Protection Services and emergency personnel in Brookport, Illinois, to aid survivors and first responders. The Salvation Army is also providing spiritual and emotional care to survivors as they cope with the tragedy.
To identify pressing needs and provide supplies, The Salvation Army will continue to work with local emergency response teams. Salvation Army personnel and volunteers are trained, and prepared, to provide sustenance and spiritual services for as long as they are needed.
The weather pattern is expected to continue throughout Monday, moving into Michigan and Ohio. Salvation Army disaster teams are ready to provide help in these two states should storms continue to grow in severity.
